COLOR-BAND PREEMIE BABY HAT

Materials:
3.75mm (F) or 4.0mm (G) crochet hook
2 colors of worsted weight (or I used 2 strands of DK in the example above)
Tapestry needle for weaving in ends.

Round 3: 2ch (this is a filler to minimize the seam and is done throughout the pattern and does not count as a stitch), 1 dc in the same st as 2ch, 1 dc in next st, *2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next st, repeat from * to end, join with a sl st into top of 1st dc a beginning of round. (36sts)

Round 7: With Color B, 2ch (does not count as a st), 1 dc in base of 2ch, 2dc into the same ch1 space, *2 dc into next 1ch space, repeat from * to end, join with sl st first dc at beginning of round.
Round 8: With Color A, 2ch (does not count as a st), 1 dc in the same st as 2ch, 1 dc into each st to end, join with a sl st into first dc at beginning of round. Finish Off. Weave in ends.

For newborns, simply add 1 more increase row to the preemie pattern and/or increase your hook size.

I used H hook, 4 ply yarn and mistakenly hdc the first 3-4 rows and then switched to dc added a row prior to the color change.  Also, sc the finish.

For the pix below, I followed the instructions exactly for the preemie size. Finished measures 5.5 " across base and 4.5 " ht - crown to base.  Way too small for my purposes.
